Tips to find best travel insurance
Tips to find good and adequate international travel health insurance.
Know more »Travel to the 29 Schengen countries in Europe has been simplified thanks to the common Schengen Visa following the Maastricht treaty which allows travel to 26 Schengen states. However to be issued a Schengen visa, the different Schengen states require Indian travelers to have adequate travel health insurance coverage. Schengen Visa insurance requirements are specified by the consulates.
According to the UNWTO 2018 Report, 51% of Global Travellers are on their way to Europe…Europe enjoys the distinction of being the continent of choice for the global traveller for many years now. Given the many breathtakingly beautiful destinations and the moderate climate throughout the year makes Europe an attractive destination for any traveller. However from an insurance perspective, Europe remains one of the costliest geographies for medical treatment. This is because of the strong Euro currency and continuously rising medical inflation.
Majority of Europe, which are 26 Schengen countries have a mandatory insurance policy for obtaining a visa and hence any traveller will need to first purchase an insurance policy. The Schengen visa requirements stipulate that the insurance coverage needs to be a minimum of Euros €30,000 for Accident & Sickness Expenses. It is important to note that all insurance companies should have an approval from the Schengen Committee for participating in the Schengen insurance program, only then can they underwrite a Schengen insurance program. Currently most of the leading travel insurers offer a specific plan for Schengen Travel which include Tata AIG,
Bajaj Allianz, Religare, Reliance General, Royal Sundaram, Future Generali etc. As an insured, once can opt for any of them given their comprehensive coverage and competitive premium.
Europe is today the largest tourist destination across all countries/continents in the world. According to UNWTO report, in 2018, 51% of the world’s travellers (around 627 million travellers, 62.7 crores) arrived in Europe and the visitors grew at a higher rate than overall global travel itself. There is clearly so much to see and experience across Europe and the Schengen visa has made it very convenient for traveller to criss-cross the continent without too many visa issues. The Schengen visa allows travellers to visit any of the 26 member countries without requiring a specific visa for each country and so the traveller needs to just apply for single Schengen visa and inform the authorities about the countries they are likely to visit.
The Schengen visa applies to all but 5 countries within Europe and firstly, it is mandatory for the traveller to have an insurance cover while applying for the visa. Secondly the minimum sum insured coverage for Accident & Sickness (A&S) needs to be €30,000 (currently approx. USD $40,000 / ₹ 24,00,000). Without these conditions being met, no visa is granted for entry to any of the Schengen countries.
It is equally important to note that the cost of healthcare is relatively high when compared to India and hence the traveller is advised to opt for a (A&S) coverage of atleast $250,000, but ideally $500,000 (₹INR 3.5 crores) under the plan they choose to buy. You can compare and buy the plan most suited to the traveller’s requirements. Post choosing the plan, simply pay with your credit/debit card/internet baking and the policy schedule will reach the traveller’ email id in a couple of minutes.
The Schengen visa travel insurance plan is specifically designed for travelers visiting Schengen Countries in Europe. It is important to note that insurance is a mandatory requirement for a visa to be granted to these countries. Visas are normally issued for 90 days for the following 29 countries: The insurance Accident & Sickness Sum Insured should be atleast 30,000 Euros
Some insurers offer a plain Accident & Sickness coverage for 30,000 Euros, which is the minimum requirement for obtaining a visa.
