Simple 3 Step Process for Settling Claims with Life Insurance Companies

  1. Reporting the Claim to the Insurance Company
    The first step for the assured/assured’s family to do is to report the claim. Once can report your claims through many channels directly with the insurance company:
    • Online at the company website,
    • At the Life Insurance Company branch nearest to you,
    • Head Office of the Insurance Company by courier/mail
    • SMS, E-mail or Through the Insurance Company call centre
    The policy docket issued at the time of receiving the policy will contain the necessary information. However kindly note that for some insurance companies claims reported online, through SMS or e-mail will not be considered as intimation. Physical documents will be required to start the process.
  2. Processing of the Claim by the Insurance Company
    The Life Insurance Company’s Claims team will assess your claim based on the initial documents submitted while reporting the claim. In case any further documents are needed from the assured’s family, the same will need to be submitted. Post receiving all the necessary documents (and conducting an investigation if required), the insurer will process your claim request as per the defined TAT’s.
  3. Settlement of the Claim by the Insurance Company
    Post receipt of all necessary documents, the insurance company will evaluate the same and based on the Terms and Conditions of the Life insurance policy, will settle the claim as per the defined timelines.

What are the Documents to be submitted for a Death Claim?

Mandatory Documents for Death Claim are
  • Claimant's (Nominee*/ Assured Family Member) statement / Claim intimation form
  • Copy of Death Certificate of the assuredissued by Local Municipal/Government Authority
  • Medical Records like Admission Records, Discharge/Death Summary
  • Original Policy document
  • KYC Documents of Claimant - Copy of Photo Identification Proof & Current Address Proof + Cancelled Cheque of account into which payment will be made
  • On Maturity or for Money Back / Pension Plans - Annuity Claim Documentation list
Additional Documents for Accidental Death
  • Copy of Medico Legal Cause of Death Certificate
  • Copy of FIR/ Panchnama/ Inquest Report & Post Mortem Report for Accidental Death &Suicide cases
  • Hospital Certificate to be filled by the treating doctor / attending physician
  • Certificate from Employer in prescribed format (for salaried individuals)
  • Copy of Driving License if Life Assured was driving the vehicle at the time of accident - if 'Accident and Disability Benefit Rider' is opted
  • Newspaper cutting / Photographs of the accident - if available

What are the Documents to be submitted for a Critical Illness / Rider** Claims?

While reporting a claim for Critical Illness / Rider Claims / Hospital Cash or Care / Specific Policies one will need the following documents:
  • Claimant's (Nominee*/ Assured Family Member) statement / Claim intimation form
  • Attending Physicians Certificate regarding the Critical Illness or Rider
  • Medical Records like Admission Records, Discharge/Death Summary
  • Original Policy document
  • KYC Documents of Claimant - Copy of Photo Identification Proof & Current Address Proof + Cancelled Cheque of account into which payment will be made
  • On Maturity or for Money Back / Pension Plans - Annuity Claim Documentation list
  • If it’s a Fixed Benefit Policy like Hospital Cash – confirmation on number of days of Hospitalisation

What are the Documents to be submitted for a Disability/Dismemberment Claim?

The documents to be submitted for a Disability or Dismemberment Claims are as follows:
  • For Disability
    • Claimant’s (Life Assured or Assured’s Family) Statement
    • Disability Certificate by Attending Physician / Institute for disabled statement
    • Rehabilitation Certificate - If applicable
    • Employer's written confirmation / statement –if Assured is a salaried professional
    • Disability Claim Form
  • For Dismemberment
    • Application Form for Dismemberment (Life Assured's or Assured’s Family Statement) with Statement
    • Attending Physician's report
    • Dismemberment Claim Form
  • Attested Copies of Case Papers of the hospital along with Discharge Summary of hospitalization
  • KYC Documents - Photo Identity of Life Assured with age and address proof + Bank Details of the claimant – Cancelled cheque (with printed name and account number)/bank passbook and NEFT Form
  • Clinical Photographs showing the injured areas - if available
  • If Hospitalisation is following an Accident, additional documents are:
    • Policy Reports including First Information Report and Final Investigation Report
*A nominee is the person appointed by the Life Assured at the time of purchase for receiving the benefits of the life insurance policy in case of an unfortunate event. **A Rider is an extra benefit that can be purchased along with your policy for increasing your cover. Note : The list of documents above is an exhaustive list by the Claims Team of the Life Insurance company has the right to call for any additional documents they deem fit while evaluating/processing a claim. The claimant must submit the documents as required by the insurance company.

Why can claims be Repudiated?

In in the claim findings, it can be clearly established that there had been a material suppression of facts pertaining to the information in Application form, which would have impacted the assessment of risk and if not disclosed at the application stage, then it may lead to repudiation of the claim.
If the documents submitted at the application/claims stage are not genuine or proved forged, it would lead to claim repudiation.
