Can I buy travel insurance after departure?

Have you already departed from India and forgotten to buy travel insurance? Can you buy Travel Insurance after departure? Don’t worry! We may have a solution for providing Indian travelers travel insurance even after they’ve departed

As per the IRDAI guidelines, you cannot buy travel insurance from any of the Indian insurers after you have departed from India. The guideline clearly states that the traveler needs to be in India at the time of purchasing the policy, and before their trip begins. Once you have departed from the country, Indian insurers cannot issue a new travel insurance policy for your ongoing trip. However on a case to case basis, the Indian insurance companies, are willing to consider, subject to approval issuance of policies for such travelers.


What if you forgot to buy insurance before departure?

    What do you need to do in this scenario? If you forgot to buy travel insurance before leaving, what can be done? Very simple

  • Send an email to the insurance company (through EIndia) with a special request to approve issuance of a travel insurance policy providing passenger information and details of travel
  • While the approval is not guaranteed , communication should clearly state the reason for missing to purchase travel insurance prior to departure
  • Declaration of “good health” and “no claims to be filed” needs to be provided in this communication with the insurer
  • At the discretion of the insurance company, they will provide an approval based on the merits of the case. More often than not, this approval is provided.
  • Premium payment is made and policy is issued through EIndia.

Who can apply for this insurance?

  • You must be an Indian citizen, PIO or OCI card holder, Foreign Passport holder with a Residence or Work Permit in India
  • Should have departed from India recently, preferably within 15 days
  • Insured traveler should be in “good health” and “not made a claim” in this initial period
  • Should not be hospitalised at the time of application of the policy
  • Should submit an email (through EIndia) with all passenger and trip related email to the insurer, who will provide an approval before the policy is issued

Can I Get Travel Insurance from India while abroad?

Yes, on a case to case basis, subject to the insurance company approval, travel insurance can be provided to you while you are abroad.


Can I buy travel insurance after I’ve already left my home country?

Yes, but subject to approval from the respective Travel Insurance companies. Some companies like Tata AIG, Bajaj Allianz, Care Health do provide travel insurance after reviewing the merits of the application from the traveler.


Within how many days of being abroad, can I apply for Travel Insurance?

Ideally you should file this application within 15 days of your departure from India. But there is no guarantee of an approval from the insurance company.


Is there a waiting period if I buy travel insurance while abroad?

No, there Terms & Conditions (T&Cs) are the same as a regular policy, assuming you purchased it before departing from India.

Yes, Cashless Hospitalisation is available under this policy through any Network Hospital of the Assistance Partner. Otherwise, you may need to pay upfront and file for reimbursement.


What documents do I need to buy travel insurance while abroad?

You'll need to provide the following details for an approval from the insurance company

  • Email with reason of not purchasing prior to departure along with “Declaration of Good Health” and “NIL Claims”
  • Passenger Information - Passport details, Age and Duration of Travel, Destination
  • Pre Existing Conditions declaration, if coverage required

Can I renew or extend my existing travel insurance while abroad?

Yes, you need to apply for an extension before your policy expires. It is recommended to apply 7-14 days prior to expiry of the current policy and post approval and payment, the extension policy will get issued.
