India is reeling under the weight of the Corona pandemic having clocked up 1.1 million (11 lacs) cases as on July 20th 2020, having reached the third place globally in a not so sought after race to the top. With not so efficient medical infrastructure and testing levels (per million) amongst the lowest in the world, it appears that we have just about explored the tip of this pandemic iceberg. Given this bleak outlook as far as the Corona pandemic is concerned,to help the public to protect themselves all insurers (life, general and health insurers) are encouraged to offer an individual COVID specific Standard Benefit based health policy, Corona Rakshak health insurance for Covid19 with the following objective:
  • To have a COVID specific benefit based product addressing health insurance needs of insuring public related to Covid 19.
  • The Covid 19 Standard Benefit based health policy shall have the basic cover as specified by the IRDAI Guidelines which shall be uniform across all Insurers.
  • The insurer may determine the premium keeping in view the cover proposed to be offered subject to complying with the norms specified in the IRDAI (Health Insurance) Regulations, 2016 and Guidelines notified there under.
  • The COVID- Standard benefit-based health policy shall offer a policy tenure of three and half months (3 ½ months), six and half months (6 ½ months) and nine and half months (9 ½ months) i.e, 105 days, 195 days and 285 days respectively.
  • All Insurers (General, Health and Life) transacting Health Insurance business may start offering this product preferably by 10th July,2020.
  • Coverage to be equal to Lump sum benefit of 100% of the Sum Insured shall be payable on positive diagnosis of COVID, requiring hospitalization for a minimum continuous period of 72 hours. The positive diagnosis of COVID shall be from a government authorized diagnostic centre.

  • Six and half months (6 ½ months) - 195 days

6. Modes of premium payment Single premium payment mode shall only be allowed.
7. Entry age Minimum entry age shall be 18 years and maximum age at entry shall not be less than 65 years
8. Benefit Structure / Termination On payment of 100% of sum insured the policy shall be terminated.
9. Waiting Period 15 days
10. Renewal, migration and portability Lifelong renewability, migration and portability stipulated under Regulation 13 and 17 of IRDAI (Health Insurance) Regulations, 2016 respectively are not applicable to this product.
11. Pricing The premium under this product shall be pan India basis and no geographic location / zone based pricing is allowed.

Corona Rakshak is a single-premium Covid19 health insurance plan that will pay 100% of the sum insured as lump-sum to the policyholder ones being tested COVID-19 positive that requires hospitalization of 72 hours or more. Currently many health insurance plans in the market do not cover the cost incurred on personal protective equipment (PPEs), masks, and other hygiene-related consumables, which are covered under Corona Kavach policy. Corona Rakshak however makes a one time lumpsum payment irrespective of the expenses incurred in the treatment. Also, the Corona Rakshak policy will terminate once the insurer makes the lump sum claim payment. Corona Rakshak health insurance plan comes loaded with COVID-19 specific coverage benefits.

  • Definition of hospital also includes set-up/make-shift hospital designated by the Government for treatment of COVID-19.
* Hospitalization Expenses (minimum 72 hours of admission) : Corona Rakshak policy will pay for the hospitalization expenses incurred by the policyholder for treatment related to Covid 19 in a government authorized diagnostic medical facility. It includes the following medical expenses:
  • Room Rent, Boarding, Nursing Expenses as provided by the Hospital/ Nursing Home.
  • Surgeon, Anaesthetist, Medical Practitioner, Consultants, Specialist Fees whether paid directly to the treating doctor or to the hospital.
  • Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and/or Intensive Cardiac Care Unit (lCCU) expenses.

Claims Process for Corona Rakshak

Benefit Claims Process
Step 1 In case of hospitalization notify the insurer of your admission in network or non network hospital. After getting admitted and at the time of discharge, settle bills directly to the hospital.
Step 2 On discharge, please ensure to collect all relevant documents, invoices, medical reports and discharge certificate from the Hospital in originals.
Step 3 Send these documents and the completely filled and signed claim form to the insurer along with your valid ID proof and age proof. The claim form is available on the company website and in your policy document kit as well.
Step 4 Post approval the reimbursement will be made subject to admissibility

Documents needed for processing a claim

For Benefit Claims:
  • Duly filled and signed Claim Form
  • Copy of photo Identity proof
  • Medical practitioner's prescription advising admission
  • Original bills with itemized break-up
  • Payment receipts
  • Discharge summary including complete medical history of the patient along with other details
  • Investigation reports including your test reports from Authorized diagnostic centre for COVID
  • OT notes or Surgeon's certificate giving details of the operation performed, wherever applicable
  • Sticker/Invoice of the Implants, wherever applicable
  • NEFT Details (to enable direct credit of claim amount into bank account) and cancelled cheque.

Exclusions of Corona Rakshak Policy

There are certain exclusions that apply to claims filed under Corona Rakshak Policy. The insurer is not liable to pay under the following circumstances:
  • If there are any diagnostic expenses made which are not related to COVID, then those expenses will not be covered in this policy.
  • If a person is tested COVID +ve before the start of the policy, then this person cannot file a claim to the company.
  • If a person is getting testing done related to COVID in diagnostic centers that are not authorized by the government then the expenses incurred will not be covered under this policy.
  • If the insured person travels to any country placed under travel restriction by the government of India the insured person will not get the benefit under this policy if the insured person tests +ve for COVID-19.
  • Treatment or Diagnostic Tests received overseas related to Covid 19.

Corona Rakshak Policy Cancellation

The insurer may cancel Corona Rakshak policy in case of any misrepresentation, fraudulent act by the insured person, non-disclosure of information, by giving a 7days notice. And if there is any misrepresentation of the information then the premium is not refunded by the health insurance provider.

You can avail coverage from ₹50,000/- (Fifty Thousand) to ₹2,50,000 (Two Lacs Fifty Thousand) under Rakshak plan, a specific health insurance policy for coronavirus treatment. The policy can be bought on Individual basis only.

An Individual can avail this policy to take care of their treatment expenses arising out of Covid-19 and avoids out of pocket expenses.   • Room Rent, Boarding, Nursing Expenses as provided by the Hospital/ Nursing Home.
