Women’s health insurance plans may be considered as insurance policies that are specifically designed keeping in mind their requirements and well-being of women, the fairer sex. Nowadays the insurers, especially the stand alone health provides, are providing different options when it comes to picking health insurance policies for women.

Apart from the standalone plans, women can nowadays also be covered for fixed benefits including Critical Illness, Cancer and Maternity. There are certain health plans that provide special benefits related to specific periods in a woman’s as she passes from adolescence to old age. With women being fiercely protective of their financial, emotional and physical independence, such plans cater to their requirements.
Women health insurance
Women as a matter of fact constitute 49% of the voters and almost 25% of the workforce in India but it’s ironical that they would not be financially prudent enough to invest in protecting themselves through a health insurance policy. Modern women are currently taking on challenges of work life balance, juggling between a well paying and professionally challenging job and managing the home and the chores that go with it. Women also become more vulnerable to health issues especially after the age of 40 upto 60 years, transitioning between a stable physical environment to then taking on critical ailments such as Arthritis, BP, diabetes, cancer etc. Women are even more susceptible to bone-related disorders and breast cancer. And this is after spending their 30’s giving birth and raising one or two children at home.

Recent studies have showed that about 80-85% of the women in the country do not have their own health insurance, and even if they do, have a basic coverage plan and this is even if they are financially independent. So when an ailment arrives unannounced, payment for the treatment of such conditions are made from their hard earned savings, and this can cause a gaping hole in the family’s finances. This is why women in their 30’s must actively consider getting themselves insured without fail to take care of oncoming medical ailments that will require hospitalisation, treatment, and maybe surgery also.
Health Insurance Priority
But why the reluctance for women to have health insurance? Here are a few reasons why women generally do not get themselves covered by medical insurance:

Lack of Awareness - In India overall, the prevalence of a satisfactory health insurance coverage is available with around 20% of the population and this shows the relative lack of importance individuals have for being insured. This is true for women as well and hence we have a low penetration of health insurance in this segment.

Financial Dependence – Many women in India are homemakers in India and this means that their spouses are the breadwinners of the family. This places the women at a position of dependence on their husbands for all financial matters and this includes insurance. Even for many women who are well educated, literate and economically independent, living in a patriarchal society means that all decisions are made by the head of the family. Before marriage it is their father, after marriage it is generally the husband making money-related decisions.

No Employment, No Group Insurance Coverage - In India, the workforce across industries and geographies employ a little less than 25% of women…this means that the number of women in active worklife is one fourth of their male counterparts. Since many of these employers in the private and public sector provide group insurance policies, logically the number of women who will be insured through these group plans will also be that much lower than men.

Maternal Traits – Women have always and will always live for their families including their husband, children and parents. They have this tendency to put others before self and focus on the well being of their loved ones. This being said, since they generally believe they are active and engaged in everything they do, they do not feel the need to be insured, or be protected by a health insurance.

Why should Women opt for Health Insurance?

Women can often experience complications during critical periods in their life from puberty, to pregnancy, harmone related disorders and due to biological factors breast cancer, thyroid, cysts, etc. As a result of this hospitalization and medical treatment expenses are most likely at these stages in their life and thus having a comprehensive women’s health insurance policy becomes important. The above also suggests that there is a definite possibility of women being hospitalized as much or more than men. Modern lifestyles and rising stress levels with work and home responsibilities coupled with physical stress, women are more prone to some diseases than men.

Another important reason is that since women are generally the fulcrum around which the home rotates and hence while doing this full-time job, they are exposed to different types of health risks on a regular basis. In an unfortunate medical emergency to the woman, the family comes under a lot of stress and additional responsibility to the family members. But if one is secured with a health insurance plan, they can not only take good care of their family, but the stress of a financial emergency can be reduced.

So some of the key reasons for Women to mandatorily have a health insurance plan are :
  • Apart from the smaller population of working women, most women are home makers and their lifestyle is relatively sedentary when compare to women who are traveling for work etc. This can lead to lifestyle diseases.
  • Given their biological differences, women are more susceptible to critical diseases like breast cancer, heart conditions, osteoporosis, harmone related conditions, development of cysts, illnesses relating to menopause etc
  • With even increasing cost of medical treatment and medical inflation, no insurance cover means, payment of expenses from their hard earned savings, which can impact the family financially.
  • Comprehensive coverage and premium discounts – Many insurance plans provide additional sum insured or a reduced premium for a women insured when compared to men…this is given the need to push more health insurance plans to cover women.
  • Most health insurance company plans also offer maternity/pregnancy benefits as a part of the coverage and this will be useful at the time of birth.
  • Income Tax benefits – For financially independent women, health insurance premium is also a tax saving instrument while filing their tax returns. Section 80D of the Income Tax Act, allows tax deductions upto ₹25,000 against the payments made for self, spouse, dependent children and parents (whether dependent or not).
  • Accidents are also covered by a health insurance plan. Hence this is additional coverage for women in an unfortunate situation if they meet with an accident.
