Health Insurance as a line of business is currently being done by both the General (Non Life) Insurers as well as Standalone Health insurance companies in India. Within the General Insurance companies, both the Private Sector and Public Sector companies have expanded the market with different types of health insurance policies. Despite there being so many active players in the Health Insurance space, the insurance penetration on health insurance is still abysmally low for a country like India. The top 5 large players in terms of business volumes and lives covered (as per IRDA data) are below (in random order)
Currently there are many good insurance providers, both General (Non Life) insurance companies as well as Standalone Health Insurance providers who offer comprehensive health insurance solutions for the Indian customer. Standalone Health Insurers like Apollo Munich, Religare Health, Star Health, Max Bupa and Non Life companies like Tata AIG, Bajaj Allianz, Reliance General, Royal Sundaram, HDFC Ergo and the Government owned Public Sector insurers like New India, Oriental and United India offer health insurance plans for both Individuals and Families. While it may not be fair to rank the insurers in terms of products, since each health insurance plan has some unique coverage/benefit, tabled below are the top retail health insurers (in random order) last year as per IRDA.
