Need for Travel Insurance while visiting Dubai:

The United Arab Emirates, sometimes simply called the Emirates, is a federation of seven emirates consisting of Abu Dhabi, Ajman, Dubai, Fujairah, Ras Al Khaimah, Sharjah and Umm Al Quwain. Each emirate is governed by a ruler; together, they jointly form the Federal Supreme Council. One of the rulers serves as the President of the United Arab Emirates. The population across the Emirates is around 9.5 million and the area covered is about 83,000 sq km and the official language in UAE is Arabic.
In 2017, an estimated 2.07 million (nearly 21 lacs) tourists from India visited Dubai, and these were not stop-over travellers. They were actually visiting Dubai for sightseeing and tourism apart from visiting friends and family. Indian tourists accounted for over 13% of the total 16 million visitors to Dubai in 2017, according to a top tourism official of the UAE. As Dubai looks to scale up its tourist arrivals to nearly 20 million by 2020, this could mean that 2.6 million (26 lacs) visitors could be Indians at the same pace of growth. Indian passport holders need a visa to visit Dubai. You can go for 48-hour or 96-hour visa, 30 days or 90 days visit visa. In addition, if you are an Indian tourist you can even apply for a multi entry long-term visa and multi entry short-term visa.
In the last 15-20 years, Dubai has grown significantly in terms of number of tourists and has become one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. One of the key reasons for this exponential growth is to do with the many tourist attractions, see table below:
Burj Khalifa Unforgettable views of Dubai from the World's Tallest Building
Dubai Marina Dinner Cruise In Dubai Marina with Music & Tanura Dance
Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo World's Largest Suspended Aquarium
Ferrari World (Abu Dhabi) First Ferrari Branded Theme Park In The World
Ski Dubai Meet Snow Penguins & Indulge in Snow Activities
Wild Wadi Water Park 30 Exciting Rides Suitable For All Ages
Dubai Fountain Dubai Fountain Lake Ride
Dubai Miracle Garden World's Largest Man-Made Flower Garden
IMG Worlds of Adventure World's Largest Indoor Theme Park with 15+ Rides
Bollywood Parks World’s first Bollywood Themed Park
advisory for Indian travellers to UAE
Given this context, it is easy to understand that the standard of living and therefore the cost of healthcare is very, very high when compared to most of the world. With so many visitors coming from all over the world, it is a reality that some of them do fall ill ad required hospitalisation. As per the statistics that were pulled out by the Dubai Authorities, it was found that many Indians were arriving in Dubai (and other parts of UAE) without sufficient travel health insurance and in case they required hospitalisation, the Dubai Government was forced to bear their medical expenses. Based on this, on October 14, 2019 the Consulate General of Dubai issued a Travel Advisory informing all Indians visiting Dubai for Tourism or Visiting family and Friends must mandatorily have travel/health insurance for the period of their stay in Dubai. Infact the leading daily of the Middle East, Khaleej Times also carried an article on the same, which is self explanatory.
It is however very important that the traveller however realises how critical it is for insuring themselves however short the trip is and for whatever the reason they are travelling. It can be extremely costly for any type of medical treatment and unfortunately one realises it only when they do end up with a Medical emergency. These emergencies are covered under the Accident & Sickness Medical Coverage. Also tourists could face other non medical emergencies including Passport Loss, Baggage Delay/Loss, Trip Cancellation, Flight Delay, Personal Liability etc.
What is interesting to note is that the cost of such a medical/health insurance policy for travel to Dubai is not costly at all when you compare the premiums payable to the cost of the holiday that one would spend for 10 days in Dubai, nor when compared to the expenses one would incur if there was a medical emergency during the holiday.
Just to give one an indication of the insurance cost for travel to Dubai, the illustration below will help:
Insurance Plan Sum Insured for Accident & Sickness in USD $ Sum Insured for Accident & Sickness in INR ₹ Premium payable in INR ₹
Plan 1 $15,000 (Asia Plan) ₹10,35,000 446
Plan 2 $25,000 (Asia Plan) ₹17,25,000 486
Plan 3 $30,000 (Asia Plan) ₹20,70,000 682
Plan 4 $50,000 (Asia Plan) ₹34,50,000 627
Plan 5 $200,000 (Excluding Americas) ₹1,38,00,000 953
Plan 6 $200,000 (Excluding Americas) ₹1,38,00,000 1,096

As can be deduced from the table above, the cost of the insurance is very reasonable when compared to potential expenses that can be incurred. And hence with the Travel Advisory from the Dubai Government, every traveller must ensure they have travel /health insurance when they are traveling to Dubai.
