Germany is part of the Schengen group of countries in Europe and hence the Indian traveller should obtain a Schengen visa in order to visit Germany. As the traveller should be aware, it is mandatory to have an insurance cover prior to applying for a Schengen visa (even for Germany), and the visa will not be granted without the insurance. The Schengen visa authorities also have made it mandatory for the insurance coverage be a minimum of €30,000 (currently approx. USD $40,000 / ₹ 24,00,000) for Accident & Sickness.
While the Schengen authorities mandate €30,000 for getting a visa, it is important to keep in mind the cost of healthcare in all European countries, which are relatively lower than USA but still significantly higher than India and hence the traveller should ensure they are adequately protected when they visit Europe. It is recommended that the traveller buy travel insurance for Germany with A&S cover of atleast $250,000 or ideally $500,000 for their trip to Germany. Also, since most Indians travel to Europe on holiday/sightseeing packages and average durations are around 12-15 days, it is likely that the traveller could also face a non-medical exigency like a Loss of Passport, Baggage Delay/ Baggage Loss, Missed Flight, Flight Delay, Bounced Hotel or even a Trip Cancellation/ Trip Curtailment. So it is recommended that the traveller also opts for best travel insurance for Germany with a wide range of Non-Medical benefits to cover potential risks that can ruin their holiday.
Currently Indian insurance companies like Tata AIG, Bajaj Allianz, Future Generali, Care insurance and Royal Sundaram have affordable German visa travel medical insurance for Indian tourists travelling to Germany. However it is not mandatory to buy a Schengen specific plan, one can opt for an Excluding Americas (Rest of the World) plan as well which is offered by all insurance companies, including the ones mentioned above.
