Visa medical insurance for Indian overseas travel

While most countries across the world do not have a mandatory “medical insurance for visa” process, there are a few of them, wherein one needs visa medical insurance cover in place while applying for the visa. The reason for ensuring that an insurance cover is available is that the country would try and ensure that in the unfortunate case of a traveller being hospitalised, the expenses are borne by the insured themselves, and not passed on the government in that particular country. Schengen countries in Europe for example have a process that requires the traveller to take out a visa medical insurance policy prior to applying for a visa and submit the insurance policy along with the visa application.
Most Indian insurance companies today offer a specific plan for travel to Schengen countries. As the traveller should be aware, it is mandatory to have an insurance cover prior to applying for a Schengen visa, and the visa will not be granted without the insurance. The Schengen visa authorities also have made it mandatory for the insurance coverage be a minimum of €30,000 (currently approx. USD $40,000 / ₹ 24,00,000) for Accident & Sickness (A&S). While the Schengen authorities mandate €30,000 for getting a visa, it is important to keep in mind the cost of healthcare in all European countries while deciding on the final sum insured to opt for. The healthcare costs in Europe are relatively lower than USA but still significantly higher than India and hence the traveller should ensure they are adequately protected when they visit Europe. It is recommended that the traveller has a plan with A&S cover of atleast $250,000 or ideally $500,000 for their European trip.

Hence while Visa Considerations may be in place for the traveller to purchase India travel insurance for international visas, one must also remember that there is pressing need to every traveller from India to have international travel medical insurance for visa application because of the following:
  • Very high cost of medical treatment in all countries across the world.
  • Coverage for Travel Exigencies like Baggage Loss/ Baggage Delay, Flight Delays, Passport Loss, Personal Liability etc can be of assistance to the traveller should such an exigency arise.
  • Trip Cancellation/Interruption can ensure refund of non refundable payments for air tickets, hotels, land packages etc.
  • Assistance Company can support the insured whilst abroad should the need arise.
